I'm always looking for new authors, especially of good hard SF. While I've always looked at the Nebula/Hugo winners, the Editors Choice also appears to be a good source of reading material.

Do you have an author in mind whose books I should read?

You might want to try Sarah Zettel. Fool's War is a good intro to her work.

Hrm. What do you consider to be "hard" SF? Do you mean mostly science, or spaceships, or something else?

In terms of science fiction, I tend towards what I think of as 'people' fiction - so things like CJ Cherryh's Merchanter books [Cyteen being a particular favourite], or Le Guin and Brin.

Hard SF means no unicorns, no elfs, and no magic. Sufficiently advanced technology that cannot be differentiated from magic is fine, though. And yes, I do like people-fiction.
