So the Chinese Government has decided that unions might be a good idea, what with all that industrialization going on, and pretty much a complete lack of safety measures. And who is lobbying against such (fairly basic) protections for workers. Foreign corporations, of course. Including Dell, Ford, General Electric, Microsoft and Nike, as represented by the American Chamber of Commerce.

I get depressed when I realize that the Chinese government cares more about people than American corporations do.

I agree this is depressing, although American corporations have a deep and lustrous history of stomping on their workers, whether American or foreign.

The day that Americans wake up and stop shopping at Wal-Mart and the behemoth dries up and vanishes will be a day we can all celebrate.

Low wages...er...prices, always!

Low wages, no healthcare, and because they're prices are actually low, poor people become dependent on WalMart. It's all a vicious cycle.

Now, if the Chinese could only get their other human rights issues under control.

Er, wasn't that the whole point of Communism? And wasn't the point of wiping out the Communist party in the U.S. to roll back the clock on workers' rights? I know, I know, they said it was to protect us from the Red Menace, but seriously, you don't really believe that, do you?

No government is perfect. But for all that China's government has major faults, it has virtues too, and by all reports, things are getting better in China, not worse. In a decade, we may well envy the people of China. More's the pity.
