Dear Secretary McPherson,
Thank you for your concern in making sure that Californians have access to safe and fair elections. Also, thank you for inviting Black Box Voting to hack away at some Diebold voting systems. However, regardless of whether Black Box Voting finds a problem in their limited scope hack, I am writing today to urge you NOT to certify the Diebold electronic election machines. There are too many documented issues with these machines.
• There is a backdoor, which allows changing of the results, as shown by European computer security expert Harri Hursti, on July 4, 2005 in Florida.
• There is no way to audit the actual voting, using these machines.
• Diebold's refusal to allow technical review of their code, to make sure that it is secure. Without permitting such review, we cannot be sure that there are no viruses or other code in there that may change results, or even invalidate an entire election.
We need to insist that Diebold live up to its responsibility and fix the well documented problems with these machines. These problems include things phantom votes, and vote subtraction. We cannot trust our democracy to an organization that has lied, and has promised to "deliver elections" to one of the two parties.
We have already spent the money on these machines, but we can now insist on audit trails. Without audit trails, and technical review of Diebold's software and hardware, we should not recertify Diebold.
