GOOD READS
------------------------------
1. Living Together: Covering Your Legal Bases
Not all couples who live together can, are ready
to, or even want to get married. If you're in this
kind of relationship, it's a great idea to create
a "living together contract" in order to clarify
events and issues that are to be expected, or may
come as a surprise.
Determine the sharing of property, the splitting
of assets, the paying of bills and much more. If
you're really serious, you'll probably want to
create an estate plan that provides for your
partner.
Unless your agreement is in writing, matters can
get complicated quickly -- often the law, and not
the wishes of you or your partner, will determine
who gets what.
Read this article to learn more about living together
contracts:
http://referral.nolo.com/nc.cfm?t=NB002700053346
2. Making Medical Decisions for Your Loved One
If you're married, you and your spouse may be able
to make medical decisions for each other if it
becomes necessary. (Unmarried couples are usually
given no such leeway.) But one person may not know
what the other would want. And if close family
members disagree with the spouse, confusion and
anger can make a tough time even worse.
Married or not, you can create a document called a
"healthcare directive," in which you express your
wishes to your physicians.
Find out more about healthcare directives:
http://referral.nolo.com/nc.cfm?t=NB002700053347
3. Marriage: Just the FAQs
Getting married can be pretty heady stuff, what
with all the requirements, procedures and
ceremonies involved. If you're asking yourself...
- "Can anyone get married to anyone?"
- "Where can we get a marriage license?"
- "Who can perform a marriage ceremony?"
..you'll find the answers to these questions --
and many more -- here:
http://referral.nolo.com/nc.cfm?t=NB002700053348
4. Getting a Divorce Without a Lawyer
Dragging attorneys into a divorce inevitably leads
to bad feelings -- or, if things are already "bad,"
then expect "worse."
Not only that, but they're expensive, too.
If you can work out the big issues (property, money
and children) yourselves without paid professionals
fanning the flames, all that remains is to ask a
court, in writing, to grant the divorce.
Read more about skipping divorce attorneys here:
http://referral.nolo.com/nc.cfm?t=NB002700053349
5. Auntie Nolo Archive: "Is Our Prenup Legal?"
We're not quite sure if she's been married or not,
but nevertheless, Auntie Nolo knows all the
marriage law you and I need to know -- even if we
don't want to!
A reader asks:
"I heard that a prenuptial agreement signed within
48 hours before a wedding is not valid. Is this
true in Ohio? We were married two hours after we
signed ours."
Find Auntie's answer here:
