Dec. 10th, 2004 12:30 amOffice of Foreign Assets Control regulations bar American companies from publishing works by dissident writers in countries under sanction unless they first obtain U.S. government approval. The fines are $1M if you fail to get permission. Oh, and if you do get permission, you're still not allowed to advertise the publication. In other words, no publishing Dr. Zhivago, or the Nobel Price winning memoirs of Shirin Ebadi of Iran. Apparently, it is "important to our national security" to make sure that dissident writers don't get published in the United States.
It's a good thing we've already gotten rid of the First Amendment, right?
