Along with René Descartes and Gottfried Leibniz, he was one of the great rationalists of 17th-century philosophy. He is considered the founder of modern Biblical criticism. His magnum opus was the Ethics. Spinoza is great. Jeremy Bentham is, too. I think of them both in the J.S. Mill class near the top, but there are probably billions of unfeted women and men who have followed their rationalism. I see Spinoza mostly in the Religious Society of Friends, but to a lesser extent in other religions. Scriptural literalists (fundamentalists or evangelicals) are the polar opposite, which is why they frighten me.
