Media Propaganda

Mediamatters has a beautiful deconstruction how a made-up allegation goes from small comments to being reported as observed truth. In this case, it's about throwing Oreos at a Republican candidate during a debate. The story gets embellished, by the candidate and his staff, every time.

In other words, don't trust what you read.

Oddly, despite living in northern Virginia (and paying semi-attention to Maryland politics), I had never heard about this until it came up *yesterday* on a local NPR show, in which they played the WTOP clip referenced in that article where Steele basically says "I saw some cookies on the stage."

Crazy stuff.

An appalling waste of perfectly good Oreos if it were true... (can you tell they aren't easily available here? ;)

I sent this to The Daily Show. Don't really expect it to show up there, but if they have slow news day, well, you never know...
